Many plants sold in garden centres spend their early life in heated glasshouses. They look lush on the shelf, but the move into a real garden can be a shock: colder nights, drying wind and heavy rain all arrive at once.
At Wild Daisy we raise our plants outdoors and in unheated polytunnels, exposed to North West weather from the start.
What “hardened” really means
A hardened plant has firmer stems, thicker leaves and a root system that has already coped with changing temperatures. When it goes into the ground it keeps growing instead of sulking for weeks.
- Fewer losses after planting, especially in spring and autumn
- Less watering in the first season, because roots grow out quickly
- Stronger flowering the following year
Getting the best from them
Plant as soon as you can after collection or delivery. If you need to wait a few days, keep the pots outside in a sheltered spot and water them when the compost feels dry.
Every plant we sell is raised to survive real weather, real soil and real gardens.
If you are not sure what will suit your garden, call in at the nursery on Wild Daisy Road or get in touch. We are always happy to help.
